EV Charging Cable Current and Power Selection Guide
Current and power should be selected from the complete charging system, not from a connector label alone. The final recommendation depends on voltage, phase, vehicle, EVSE, cable construction and destination-market requirements.
State the electrical target
Include rated current in amps, voltage, single-phase or three-phase supply, target charging power and whether the value is continuous or project-specific. For a portable charger, also state the input plug and control-box configuration.
Use the system relationship as a check
For an AC system, power is broadly related to voltage, current and phase. Treat this as a planning check, not a substitute for the exact datasheet, protective device, vehicle limit or local installation rules. The vehicle and EVSE may limit the delivered power below the cable’s maximum rating.
Common sourcing mistakes
- Quoting 32A without stating voltage or phase
- Calling a three-phase cable a universal cable
- Assuming a connector family defines the cable rating
- Ignoring inlet, wallbox and vehicle compatibility
- Using a family image as proof of a model-specific rating
