Direct answer

An EV charging gun ODM project should move through five gates: brief and RFQ, proposed design and revision, sample build, representative validation, and approved-version release. The buyer—not a product name—must define the connector role, AC or DC use, electrical class, market, environment and required evidence before discussing repeat orders.

What are the five ODM gates?

GateBuyer outputRelease condition
1. BriefMarket, use case, interface, electrical and commercial requirementsOpen questions recorded
2. Design proposalModel, drawings, BOM or revision, label and packaging draftAssumptions accepted
3. SampleIdentified physical sample and test setupSample matches proposal
4. ValidationResults with representative EVSE, vehicle/load and environmentFailures resolved or documented
5. ReleaseApproved revision, files and change ruleRepeat orders reference the release

What should the ODM brief contain?

Specify equipment role, connector family and direction, AC/DC, voltage, current, phase, cable length and construction, environment, target country, markings, languages, accessories, packaging, sample quantity and evidence needed. Separate confirmed requirements from supplier recommendations.

How should sample validation be handled?

Check identity and construction first, then use representative supply and charging equipment. Record the vehicle or load setup, conditions, observed behaviour, pass criteria and unresolved limits. Electrical safety tests should be performed by qualified personnel using an agreed plan; do not infer safety from a visual check.

How is revision control maintained?

Give every approved configuration a model and revision identifier. Store the RFQ, drawings, label, manual, sample photos, test results and packing list in one project folder. A connector, cable, housing, firmware display, marking or accessory change should trigger a written impact review before production.

Common ODM mistakes

Starting with a logo instead of a product definition, testing a sample that is not the quoted revision, mixing AC and DC equipment roles, and accepting a “same as last order” statement without a controlled change record.

FAQ

Is ODM different from adding a logo?

Yes. ODM may involve a product definition or design change; private labeling may only change approved artwork. The validation and document scope depend on what changed.

When should the buyer discuss volume?

Discuss expected volume early for feasibility, but release a repeat-order quantity only after the model, evidence and commercial assumptions are documented.

Can one validation cover every market?

Not automatically. Electrical supply, marking, standards and vehicle or equipment acceptance may vary by market and model.
